The Silom Street Fair and Parade celebrating the end of the Asian Games
December 19, 1998
The ceremonies began
around 4pm with the Governor of Bangkok and 1993 Miss Universe (of
Thailand) presiding, as dignitaries from former and future host countries
of the Asian Games looked on from the front row.
This was followed by
a parade which began normally enough. A float with the dignitaries
leading the way followed by delegations from participating countries and
marching bands
But things started taking
a more oddly bizarre Bangkok twist as soon as the Thai delegation marched
by dressed in very phallic flower costumes. Then came assorted culturally
mixed visions of ghouls, goblins, and who knows what else.
But the crowd really
went crazy for the paraders representing the most notorious street in Asia
- Patpong Road, center of Bangkok's well known adult entertainment industry.
