Transcultural Approach To Individuation Of Additional Language Learning
Alan Brady
Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan

This paper argues for transculturation to help learners individuate their learning of English as an additional language at the tertiary level in Japan, where the majority of coursework and the everyday medium of conununication within and outside the classroom is not English. In such a context, especially when English courses are offered as part of the institution's general education requirement for non-language majors, learners should be assisted to identify their own goals in relation to their personal as well as social needs . Transculturation is a three stage, concentric circle framework process where students are guided to effectively transform to new ways of learning, beyond a dependent orientation towards a more independent orientation to study. This synthesis results in a far richer interdependency, supported by a broader sociocultural identity where students - and teachers - can explore potentialities for life-long learning utilizing the additional language.
