Culture in the Classroom 1--Seeing ourselves differently
William Holden III
JALT
Over the last decade or so, the need for integration of cultural
awareness with language teaching has become widely acknowledged.
While much effort to accomplish this has so far been directed at assisting
learners to come to terms with the culture of the English speaking Western
culture, and at sensitizing Western instructors to the cultural background
of learners and its influence on second language learning style and interaction,
less attention seems to have been paid to the role that cultural presuppositions
play in student-student interaction. This
workshop is designed to encourage participants to examine the assumptions
they hold about their own culture and the ways in which these assumptions
may color their perception of members of other cultures.
