On-Line Materials for Community English Classes
Bruce Vorland
Aichi Institute of Technology, Japan
University and college English language teachers are increasingly finding
themselves involved in planning and conducting short-term classes for the
non-full-time student. Students attracted to community classes, unlike
university students, are of varied educational backgrounds and often have
more specific goals in mind. Materials used in a community class must allow
for the differences in abilities, be obviously practical and put the student
at ease. A four-unit lesson plan http://www.aitech.ac.jp/-iteslj/Lessons/Vorland-4units/
an introduction to the course and daily work sheets will be presented.
The daily work sheets are tied to specific supplementary materials such
as menus, newspaper inserts, travel guides and maps which will be exhibited.
Information on how to make lessons available on the web as well as other
web resources already available will also be shown.
Bruce Vorland has been teaching English at Aichi Institute of Technology
in Toyota, Japan for more than ten years. He has also been teaching intensive
summer community classes for the last 6 years.
