English Education and Teacher Training: From Past to Present
This paper traces the development of English education
and teacher training in Thailand. It explores the concepts, philosophies
and policies of some of the major changes and their realization in curriculum
and instruction in both schools and teacher training institutions.
It further proposes some innovations in English education and teacher training
that, among other things, can be facilitated by regional and international
cooperation.
Suntana Sutadarat, M.A. in Applied English Linguistics
and Ph.D. in
Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison,
is associate professor at the Faculty of Education, Ramkhamhaeng University,
in Bangkok. She has been involved in the work of Thailand TESOL since
1993 and was president of the association from 1996 to 1998 and chair
of the First Pan Asian Conference, held in Bangkok in January 1997.
