Curriculum Development. Designing A Pacific Program For Asian Needs
Rodney Gillett
Central Queensland University - Fiji International Campus, Fiji
This presentation will examine the development of curriculum for English
as Foreign Language and the challenges of its design and implementation
for a new program at an Australian university delivered to students from
North-East Asia in the Fiji Islands. It will focus on the development of
a new curriculum in relation to Jack Richard's model: course design, teaching
methodology, and teaching and learning procedures. It will seek to examine
the various issues associated with placement, needs analysis, teaching
guidelines, course structure, and assessment.
The challenge is to develop a learner-centered curriculum model that
in involves teachers in developing and designing curriculum. It is vital
to initiate active teacher participation in program planning and evaluation
as well program implementation. It is increasingly being acknowledged by
researchers that classroom teachers are the best placed to diagnose and
cater for learners' needs. The further challenge then is for appropriate
teacher development to provide teachers with skills in curriculum development
and evaluation. Participants in the workshop part of the presentation will
explore these challenges and issues.
