Movies: A Treasury for Communicative and Cross-Cultural EFL Teaching
Hajime Umeda
Suzuka International University, Japan
In teaching EFL, a key to success is to carefully select the appropriate
classroom approach. Having completed reading and grammar-oriented EFL classes
in high school, many Japanese EFL students are eager to learn communicative
English skills at the college level. In response to this need, American
movies can become a useful teaching material in the Japanese EFL classroom
in two ways: (1) to provide the students with listening comprehension practice/training
and (2) to enable the students to become more familiar with different cultural
aspects depicted in the movie scenes. In this presentation, the presenter
will report how he "activated" his elective EFL classes by showing the
movie Rainman. Moreover, based on the results of a questionnaire given
to the students, he will also discuss their responses to studying EFL through
watching movies.
